Any person seeking permission for entry into the Basic Peace Officer Certification Academy must meet the following:
* Must be at least 21 years old, or 18 years old if they have an Associates Degree from an accredited college or university, 60 credit hours from an accredited college or university, or a minimum of 2 years of military service with an Honorable Discharge.

Must be a U.S. citizen.
*
Must have a High School Diploma, or GED and 12 hours of credit with a 2.0 average from an accredited college or university.
*
If the applicant has previous military service, a discharge of nothing less than Honorable conditions.
*
Must not have any Texas Commission on Law Enforcement license revoked, or voluntarily surrendered.
*
Must have no conviction or court-ordered Community Supervision (including Deferred Adjudication) of a Class A misdemeanor, or above.
*
Must have no conviction or court-ordered Community Supervision (including Deferred Adjudication) of a Class B misdemeanor within the last 10 years.
*
Must have no conviction for any grade of criminal offense involving Family Violence.
*
Must not be currently under Indictment for any criminal offense.
*
Must not be prohibited from operating a motor vehicle and must possess a valid driver's license.
*
Must not be prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
*Must not have been convicted of a DWI within the past 10 years.
In addition to these prerequisite requirements, each prospective student must submit the following prior to the first day of class:

Must take and pass the ABLE Basic Skills test and demonstrate minimum overall 10 th grade language and communication ability.

Must provide proof of U.S. citizenship.
*
Must provide proof of high school graduation or, if not a high school graduate, proof of successful completion of a GED program with proof of successful completion of at least 12 hours of college credit with at least a 2.0 academic average.
*
If applicable, submit a copy of their military discharge DD-214 documents.
* Must take and submit a medical examination to include, at minimum, a check of the following, with the result of each within normal limits:
-Review of Systems
-EKG
-Lab Tests for Blood Sugar and Body Fat Count
-Urine Screen for Drugs and Alcohol

Must submit a processed TCLEOSE TCIC/NCIC Criminal History check for verification of the student's criminal history.
*
Must submit a local criminal history from the law enforcement agency serving the jurisdiction in which the student resides.
*
Must submit a copy of their valid driver's license.
* Must have registered in the academy and paid the appropriate registration fee at least three (3) working days prior to the first day of class.
Any prospective student failing to meet these standards and prerequisite requirements will not be allowed to attend the academy class, also any student permitted into the class, and is later found to not meet these minimum requirements, will be immediately dismissed from the class.
