The first major construction project of the bond issue, the $26 million Recreation, Education and Kinesiology Center is being partly financed by student fees. This complex symbolizes the UTB/TSC spirit of cooperation. A student initiative to finance and build their own recreation center was joined by the university’s efforts to meet academic demands, resulting in the creation of one exemplary facility to serve both purposes. The Health and Human Performance Department continues to expand opportunities for some graduates to be certified physical education teachers in Texas. Another fast-growing HHP degree track, exercise science, can be a jumping-off point for advanced work in physical therapy, cardio rehab or medical school. The 150,000-square-foot REK Center will include three basketball/volleyball courts, a weight room, an indoor track and a multipurpose exercise room. Sports fields will surround the facility, making this the anchor of the campus recreational zone. The Health and Human Performance Department will have access to more and better equipped lab space in this new facility, allowing for expanded work on health concerns of the Lower Rio Grande Valley. “Our research will place a priority on pediatric obesity that is such a concern for the children in our area,” says Dr. Zelma Mata, chair, Health and Human Performance.
