With $17 million and nearly 50,000 square feet in renovations planned for the International Technology, Education and Commerce Campus (ITECC), UTB/TSC reaffirms its commitment to this unique partnership between business, industry and education. First-class, flexible instructional space is the goal of this bond-funded renovation project.
Created after UTB/TSC purchased the former shopping mall in 2002, ITECC includes the university’s technical training programs, continuing education workshops, newcomer industries, international banking and business services, the Brownsville police academy and a small business incubator that has already helped create more than 40 businesses and 947 jobs for the area.
Companies located at ITECC benefit from their connection to the university, while also providing internships for UTB/TSC students. The planned renovations will provide lecture halls, office space and a communications lab where students can work with cameras and sound equipment in real world television situations.
“After being guided through the careful start-up steps, fledgling companies office right here in the incubator, allowing them the opportunity to focus on growing their core business and to conserve their limited working capital,” says Jim Holt, dean, Workforce Training and Continuing Education.
Renovations are under way. A new air conditioning system with two 1,000-ton
chillers has been installed.
The second phase of the roof replacement project has begun and when finished will encompass about 75 percent of the entire roof. |
