MATH 4329  Number Theory

Grade & Evaluation

You can see the final grade, student evaluation and comment about my teaching for this course. I put ALL of the comments. I even didn't arrange the order. I simply typed the comment and my response for that. So you can find all the 'good' and 'bad' comments about my lecture. I hope that this is helpful for you to decide whatever.

An excellent class, well organized, and very well placed. A+.

I enjoyed the course but it went to fast at times.

It is an interesting class, and I look forward to take the graduate course. It never stops to amaze the things you can do with mathematics.

I believe that the fact that you let us turn in the homework after a week is very benificial. [Good]

I like homeworks due in a week. I would like the class covering more material. [Good]

Though I really enjoy the teaching style of this particular prof., I was not as impressed with this course as I thought I would be. Even though we covered more than any previous classes, I felt as through we could have covered more if we did more application & examples & less proof concentration. I did enjoy the course & can now tell you if your're messing a number in an ISBN code, I could tell you what that # is :). Number theory is a flower.[no bubbling on the overall question]
(Thanks for your comment... Please try to understand that Math. without proof is nothing..  After get used to do prooves we could speed up... Anyhow I am thinking about it and try it next time...)

This was a great class. Number theory is the core for understanding math as a whole. I learned a lot and enjoyed the experience. It was exciting to see how much he enjoyed the subject and made it interesting and exciting for us to be in the class with him. [Exceptionally Good]
(I am happy to hear that!! *^^*  see you..)

This course was very informative and presented in a very captivating way. I feel it really broadened by thinking capabilities and understanding - as well as love - for mathematics. Thank you. :). (Number Theory is like a flower!) [Exceptionally Good]
(Love it!! Love it!! LOVE it!!  *^^*  it's beautiful!!!)

Student Comments

I received a letter with this evaluation, which says;

"... the written comments have been cut off and destroyed without academic review.

We regret that we will not be able to return the written comments to you. We have been advised by both the UT system Office of General Counsel and the federal office that oversees the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA) that it is a violation of a student's right to privacy for you to see the comments without the permission of the student. ..."

I am sorry for this... but there is nothing I could do about this... I just wish that the Final Grade and Evaluation points are helpful for your decision...

Student Comments

Though I sometimes found it difficult to understand the proves, I truly enjoyed the class, and found it very interesting. [Exceptionally Good]

If you found that math. is interesting, then the next thing you could do is 'enjoying it'. I wish you could have "fun" with math in the future... thanks..  best wishes...

I think you are doing a good job. You give explanations when needed and tell us what to expect. [Exceptionally Good]

Thanks...

Dr. Yi is a extraordinary teacher. He is very concerned about the well being of his student. Thank you for your time! [...]

And you don't bubbled the 'overall' question... hahaha...   Thanks for your comment... I will try to do my best...

Should slow down a bit. Dr. Yi is a great instructor I wish I knew about a 1/8 of what he knows of math. I enjoy the class very much. [Exceptionally Good]

Is it 1/8? or 1/5??  I couldn't read your writing clearly... So I decided to use 1/8, instead of 1/5... haha...  ^^;;  You know what?? You know more than you think you have right now... believe me!!  I don't like to say 'Good Luck', so.. 'May God be with you..'

Sir, out of all my classes the only one I looked forward to coming to was yours. Maybe because you put things so clearly us to what to expect for test. Language or ethnic background was not a barrier as in other classes where its hard to understand. Great job. Keep it up! [Exceptionally Good]

I am overwhelmed....  Thanks a lot...  It's not because of me, but because of youself...  KEEP IT UP!!!

Excellent Teacher. [Exceptionally Good]

Excellent Student!!!! ( right?? )  haha...  thanks....

I have no complaints except if you could please write maybe a little neater. [Exceptionally Good]

I got this kind of comment only once this semester...  so I think I have been improved....  I will try more... thanks...

(no comment) [Above Average]

OK.. OK... This is the only one comment with 'above average' not only in this course but also in the whole courses in this semester, which is the only one except Good or Exceptionally Good.  WHY... WHY...???  Without comment how do I know your thought... How can I improve my teaching...

You really opened my mind to new possibilities. Continue being good. [Exceptionally Good]

Please let me know if you could do something because of this...  Keep it up!!!

(no comment) [Exceptionally Good]

... ... ^^

Needs more flexibility. [Exceptionally Good]

Flesibility on what?? I am always flexible on my office hour, so I don't think it is..  grading?? no way!!  ^^...   so... ?????? I need more explanation about this...

Give more example: make it more interesting. [...]

With all the "exceptinally good" for the other questions.. You didn't bubbled in #1 question!!!  (Today's lecture... don't miss any bubble!!!  ^^)  Wow!!! Finally something I can't... I don't think I could make mathematics more interesing. Mathematics itself is interesting... But there is one thing I know about this... YOU could make mathematics more interesting to yourself...  you know what I mean...  (but I promise I will try to do my best...)

Give shorter tests, not too many proofs, and try to be not so hard on the grading. Probably, I would love to see better reviews on what will be on the tests, and better understanding of how you want the answer to stand for. [Good]

Let me think about this...  (but at this moment I really believe that I only asked necessary ones in the test...)

Student Comments

  Good job Dr. Yi

(*^^*)

Keep up the good work.

(*^^*)

Keep on being flexible. The sign of a good instructor is one that changes his/her method of instruction when s/he sees that the students are having problems.

(I think and believe that I am always flexible. The problem is that not many students willing to 'use' my flexibility. They should try to let me know what they think...  Thank you for your comment..)

I just have to say that I very much enjoyed your class. It is only normal for one to get nervous about the new teacher on campus. You just don't know what to expect. I like your teaching methods and I think we all appreciate your availability and true concern for our progress. Thanks. P.S. Math is beautiful :)

(Frankly I didn't expect this much.. YES, MATH IS BEAUTIFUL!!! and you see that!! Wow!! Good for you!! I am really happy about that!!! Please enjoy Math.)

I would like to thank you for all your help. You are a great instructor and very understanding.

(*^^*)

The instructor was well all around the content of this material was well over my head.

(Like I told in class, the main difference between an instructor and a student is ... -you know... *^^*-   .   No matter how many times I teach this course, I always try to make sure I don't miss or forget anything before each class...)

He is very helpful and made himself available to me. It was difficult to understand him sometimes. This book was not easy to understand, I understand why Mrs. Pena insist we not only read but learn to speak math.

(Like I told.. the best learning method is teaching somebody. Try to explain the material you learn or studying, you are the one learning most.)

Go somewhat slower in order to better understand. Especially for those who aren't A students, Thank you.

(I got a lot of 'complaining' about the speed this semester. I will think about that...  Thanks...)

The instructions are very interesting and you explain extremely well. The only thing or comment I have is that you go too fast, But, other than that I enjoyed the class very much.

(" " ")

I was glad you showed down in class, to make sure all the students grasped the lesson. The encouragement you gave to the students to come to your office for help was astonishing. You welcomed us into your office all the time and many professors would not give us that offer. Great job, I enjoyed the class. Your method of grouping students to work together was great. I did learn. Thanks.

(I really like to have visitors in my office - sometime I am so boring..  *^^*-. You shoud 'USE' your instructor, like I said. I am trying to make this group study more officially... )

The class is fun but a bit too fast for me. Trying to watch what you write, say and actually write it down is hard. Keep the pace down, we are not rushing. Great idea on groups.

(Because of that, I think the 'class note' on my web page whould be helpful. I will try to make it more effective..)

I enjoyed the class. You were very patient. Maybe the course should have more prerequisites in order to cover more chapters.

(hmm....  let me think... )

You did a really great job. I really learn something new.

(I am just happy to hear that..)

I think the way you explain things is very effective. Thank you for slowing down a little. This is a new way of thinking for many of us, not being all numbers. Reviews do really help a lot. Thanks for making yourself always available to your students. Not many do that.

(I believe that students are the leader of the class, not instructor.)

His communication of the material is exceptional. However, the lectures were too speedy. I would suggest to take a more moderate pace with the material he is teaching. Thanks.

(speed again... -sigh..-  I will really think about it!!)

Don't change your attitude.

(I think it's really difficult to change one's attitude (and personality).. Thanks..)

Dr. Yi, I believe that you are an exceptional instructor. Thank you for making time to see your student and emphasizing that you are here to help us. So we may "use" you. That make you fantastic. Keep up the excellent work!

(I want to be 'used'... but not that many students do that...)

It is a fun learning experience. You make Math even more interesting.

(You clearly said 'interesting', not 'difficult', right??? *^^*    I am just happy.... Thanks... )

I really enjoyed your class this semester. I liked the quizes and the homework assignments, they gave me a chance to practice and see if I was doing them well. I think you should use this in your other classes. Maybe you can assign homework more frequently. Thanks a lot, I felt like I understood your class this semester. :)

(More homework means more work for me!!   (LOL)*^^*   OK I will try...  Thanks...)

Slow down.\

(I put down all the comments in the evaluations (not only good ones but also bad ones too) and I even didn't try to change the order. So I just typed the comments as they are in the evaluation envelop. But the last comment is this!!  OK, OK. I will try to slow down, really!!  But how can I cover the material with that slower speed???)
