UTB/TSC Tech Prep Enrollment Profile

May 1, 2004

Rio Grande Valley Tech Prep students have begun taking advantage of the opportunity to transition from high school to college and to claim credit for their articulated courses at the college level. For example, data from the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College reflects that since September 2003, 523 students from 10 high schools have been awarded 2,748 credits by UTB/TSC. This award of credit reflects a dollar savings of approximately $180,000 for these students. At the same time, Tech Prep students, who have been counseled about making the transition from high school to college throughout their high school years and who have been encourage to participate in high school programs blending rigorous academics with work-related skills, tend to be better prepared and to need less remediation when they enter the postsecondary component of their education. Having focused, a better-prepared student creates “wins” for everyone--the college, the student, and the taxpayer!

Seamless Transition State Conference

March 8-10, 2004

Prisci Roca Tipton, Director of P-16 and Tech Prep and Dr. Eli Pena, Director Academic Advising highlighted the uniqueness (a model) of the 8-year educational plans particularly demonstrating how high school programs of study coupled with the TSC certificate and associate degrees transition into the UTB BAT and BAAS degrees. The uniqueness of the 8-year educational plans focus on articulating current 6-year educational plans (4 for high school and 2 for college AAS degrees) into bachelor level programs of study. The UTB/TSC BAT and BAAS degrees allow students who have completed AAS degrees (Tech Prep career tracks) to move into bachelor level tracks (BAT and BAAS) automatically. The understanding of these seamless educational pathways for students that provide barrier-free transitions from secondary to post secondary education and those collaborations that are necessary for that to happen is considered key to more appropriate academic advising of Tech Prep students.
