ABOUT TECH PREP

What is Tech Prep?

Tech Prep is a way to begin college while still in high school. Students take Tech Prep courses in high school and receive college credit when applied to specific high-skill, high-wage careers. After high school, students continue their studies at Texas Southmost College and The University of Texas at Brownsville to earn a certificate (one year or less), associate (two years) or baccalaureate (four years) degree.

How do I qualify for college credit at UTB/TSC?

  • Take Tech Prep courses in high school.
  • Make a B in the course(s), or the last course in a sequence, as a junior or senior.
  • Make a B in each prerequisite course.
  • Enroll at UTB/TSC no later than 24 months after you graduate from high school.

What are the steps to getting college credit at UTB/TSC?

  • When you apply to UTB/TSC, submit an official transcript with your application to the Admissions Office. Make sure the Tech Prep courses are designated with an "A" on the transcript.
  • Visit with an Academic Advisor to discuss your Tech Prep credits and declare the appropriate Program of Study.
  • When your official transcript has been reviewed, you will receive the Tech Prep credit.

What happens if UTB/TSC does not offer the Program of Study that I followed in high school or if I decide to study something else in college?

You will receive 3 hours of free elective credit.
