ATC FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is the UTB/TSC Tech Prep Mission?
To increase Tech Prep collegiate options, opportunities, and awareness for area high school students while maximizing resources and minimizing duplication of effort and to assist in addressing the Closing the Gaps goals for participation and success, including coordination with P-16 and Enrollment Planning Offices.

Who gets Tech Prep credit at UTB/TSC?
Any high school student whose transcript shows a grade of 80 or above in a state-wide or locally articulated Tech Prep course.

High school Tech Prep credit is posted upon receipt & review of official high school transcript.

What is the UTB/TSC pathway for students to use Tech Prep credit for appropriate Associate and Applied Science  degrees at UTB/TSC?
Students attending UTB/TSC have an opportunity to pursue a certificate, an associate, or a bachelor's degree and apply their high school tech prep credit towards these degree requirements. Students can begin their course of study in high school and continue at Texas Southmost College and The University of Texas at Brownsville for a technical, associate, and a baccalaureate degree. The student's high school program of study combines the academic courses needed for success in college AND the technical courses that begin to prepare him or her for a career. With academic advisor assistance, students can use Tech Prep credit towards requirements in the appropriate UTB/TSC Certificate or Associate and Applied Science degrees.

What happens to a student's credit if UTB/TSC does not offer the program of study?
The student will receive 3 hours of elective credit.

What happens to the articulated credit if a student opts out of that program of study?
The student will receive 3 hours of elective credit.

Does completion of the locally-articulated course sequence result in award of a single advanced measure, or are multiple measures possible?
In a locally-articulated agreement the completion of the sequence of courses may result in the award of a single advanced measure. If however, the locally-articulated course sequence has in it a statewide-articulated ATC course, then it might be possible to receive a second advanced measure for completing that stand-alone course.

Do districts have the option to not award DAP advanced measures for these courses?
Do they have this option for any of the other possible advanced measures, like AP and dual credit? Yes, districts have much flexibility in determining what courses will count toward advanced measures. Districts may select within the allowable options outlined in 19 TAC Chapter 74. Some districts only award DAP measures for AP courses while others limit their measures to dual credit. Regardless of the options selected by the district, the allowable options should be clearly communicated to parents, students, and  the community as well as documented in board policy.
