Our goal is to help students develop confidence with the reading process.


The Reading Lab is a place where students can learn different techniques and approaches to reading across the curriculum. Services are designed to help students succeed academically and become independent learners.

Students access our services on a walk-in basis or by appointment.  Services are available individually or in a group setting

    

Through the Reading Lab, students can:           

  • Become aware of reading strengths and weaknesses through a variety of informal assessments
  • Learn comprehension strategies and how to apply them to college reading
  • Improve their reading comprehension and critical thinking skills
  • Learn study skills, test preparation, and time management techniques
  • Access supportive lessons and materials
  • Work with a tutor one-on-one or in a group setting

We support the UTB/TSC Reading Department and the courses offered by assisting students in strengthening specific skill areas such as:

  • Identifying main idea, context clues, authors purpose
  • Recognizing supporting details, patterns of organization,
  • Critical reading, vocabulary building, making inferences
  • Annotating, outlining, summarizing

 

In addition, the Reading Lab also offers:

  • THEA/COMPASS tutor guided test prep
  • Handouts on  SQ3R, note taking, outlining for speeches, text book reading
  • Computer use for students receiving tutoring

 

The Reading Lab also offers specialized tutoring for students in the following programs:

  • STING Success
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Computer Information Systems
  • Accounting
