  Healthy Communities of Brownsville

Who are we? Healthy Communities of Brownsville, Inc. (HCB) is a non-profit grassroots community organization dedicated to improving the quality of life in Brownsville.

Our members come from local hospitals, schools, universities, churches, businesses, and service agencies. We are doctors, university professors, nurses, parents, students, teachers, clergy, and business owners.

We are all different, but we share a common vision – to work together to build a better Brownsville.

    Our Work
HCB is organized into three committees to focus on our three areas of concern: Education, Environment, and Health. Each committee – known as a Trendbender group - meets on a regular basis and has its own goals and projects.

Our mission is to establish strategies, priorities and actions to improve the quality of the environment and to reduce health and education disparities in the Brownsville community. Our work is primarily youth-oriented.

    Education
    Goals are to:

    • Increase the number of students that graduate from high school.
    • Increase the number of students who pursue higher education.
    • Provide some support and options for students to reach their full potential.
    Current projects:
Educating parents and community members on how to build assets in our youth. Upcoming projects include career path seminars and career mentoring.

    Environment
    Goals are to:

    • Generate awareness about local environmental issues.
    • Increase participation in recycling efforts.
    • Decrease the amount of litter throughout the city.
    Current Projects:
Brownsville city-wide clean-ups, and educating citizens about recycling and littering through public awareness campaigns. Upcoming projects include developing a pilot program for curbside recycling.

    Health
    Goals are to:

    • Reduce obesity and Type 2 diabetes.
    • Reduce teen pregnancy rates.
    • Improve the mental health status of our youth.
Current projects: Education and awareness activities focused on both obesity prevention in youth and prevention of teen pregnancy, and piloting an innovative school-wide discipline program. Upcoming projects include piloting a nutrition awareness program.
