C.     Grants/Funding

 

July 2006, received service learning grant for “Adventure Fitness” summer camp program.

 

June 2001, Sub-contracted $173,415 federal grant to support an after school program for 3rd to 8th grade children in the Gadsden School District (an economically struggling area in Southern New Mexico).  The program provided physical education, recreation, and academic enrichment for approximately 150, 3rd to 8th graders as well as salaries for 14 teachers, and a project coordinator.  August 2000 – June 2001.

Program Coordinator/Director:

·        “CAMP STING OUTDOOR ADVENTURE”, an adventure/fitness camp for 6 to 12 year old children (offered each summer since 2005).

·        “WE-SMILE FITNESS CAMP” for children with autism in the Brownsville I.S.D. (offered each summer since 2005).

·        Director of the NMSU Summer Sports Camp.”  This camp is designed to teach developmentally appropriate activities and the importance of a healthy lifestyle to 5- to 12- year old children.  The camp provides employment for approximately 10 - 15 NMSU students and local teachers, and serves about 250 - 300 children in the Las Cruces area. Summers of 1998 – 2001.

·        Provided recreation services for the Down on the Border annual Easter egg hunt (2007)

·        Provided lecture for the parents of children with special needs at the annual B.I.S.D. special education conference (2007)

·        Provided services for the Down on the Border “Kid Fest” (2006)

·        Provided services for Special Olympics Bowling event sponsored by B.I.S.D. (2006)   

·        Provided a “Field Day” event for the children of the Sunny Glen Children’s Home.  Outdoor/Adventure activities were facilitated by kinesiology majors (May 2005, 2006, 2007). 

·        Provided an Outdoor/Adventure summer camp for the children of the Valley (Summer 2005, 2006, 2007).

·        Provided a fitness camp for the autistic children of the Brownsville Independent School District (Summer 2005, 2006, 2007).

·        Provided an informative lecture dealing with physical fitness and autism to parents of autistic children in the Brownsville Independent School District (Summer 2005, 2006).

·        Provided a regional Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation

and Dance (TAHPERD) Adventure/Outdoor workshop for teachers, pre-service teachers, paraprofessionals, and students (November 2005).  

·        Participate regularly in the Hispanic Health Research Center Community Advisory Board meetings (2004 - 2006).              

·        Teacher In-Service Presentation for the High School teachers of Brownsville ISD.  "Methods of including Adventure/Outdoor Activities in the High School P.E. Curriculum" (Summer 2004).

·        Presented a unit on outdoor activities (e.g., canoeing, rock climbing, etc.) for the CATCH program at Tombaugh Elementary School, Las Cruces, New Mexico (Spring 2000).

·        Provided leadership workshop informing students about the career choices and opportunities within the field of kinesiology.  Also provided rock climbing experience for student participants as well as sponsors of New Mexico MESA program (Spring 2000).

Program Development

The following programs have been developed with aspirations of being provided on an annual basis.

 

Developed and implemented CAMP STING OUTDOOR ADVENTURE, an adventure/fitness camp for 6 to 12 year old children held on the UTB/TSC campus during the each Summer since 2005.

 

Developed and implemented a fitness camp for the children participating in the “We-Smile” program sponsored by Brownsville Independent School District (BISD).  The camp was developed for children with autism, and includes presentations to administrators and parents.  The program has been held each Summer since 2005.

 

Developed “Field Day” program for the Sunny Glenn Children’s Home.  Adventure/Outdoor activities are facilitated by Kinesiology majors enrolled in the Outdoor Education course.  This field day has been held annually since 2005.    

 

Developed Adventure/Outdoor workshop for the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (TAHPERD).  Workshop was provided for teachers, pre-service teachers, paraprofessionals, and students of the Rio Grande valley.  The workshop helped physical educators meet the requirements of the adventure/outdoor TEKS.
