STING Success Peer Mentor Program

The STING Peer Mentor Program offers entering freshman a retention support program that teaches students to believe in themselves, learn how to navigate the college environment, and teaches them how to take advantage of campus resources and opportunities. In each lab a peer mentor, staff instructor and tutor meet with students on a weekly basis to deliver a college success curriculum which covers various topics that will teach students to succeed in college. Students also receive tutoring in their developmental area of need which could include reading, writing or math. Outside of the lab, peer mentors and tutors are available to work with students on an individual basis during office hours. Students must enroll in NCB 1000 lab section to participate in the STING Success Peer Mentor Program.
Mission Statement
The mission of the Students Together, Involving, Networking and Guiding (STING) Success Series Peer Mentor Program is to assist developmental students by successfully retaining them in college, teach them competencies that will create a foundation of college success, and have them learn how to take advantage of campus resources and opportunities. STING will provide a professionally-supported, academic curriculum that will enhance their first year success competencies and tutor them in their developmental area of need. STING will also provide a peer mentor who will assist them in achieving their highest potential.
NCB 1000
All students who have not complied with the Texas Success Initiative policy (College Ready) must enroll in NCB 1000 lab section. Student must pass the state required test which includes the THEA test or an approved alternative test. Students who fail to meet one of the minimum passing scores in reading, writing, or math in the state required exam must register in NCB 1000 lab section. Students who are exempt or pass all sections of the state required test do not need to register in NCB 1000. NCB 1000 is a non credit based course and students receive an “S” for Satisfactory or “U” for Unsatisfactory on their transcript. Students who receive a “U” on their transcript for NCB 1000 lab and are deficient in one of three areas (reading, writing or math) must register for NCB 1000 the following semester. Students are exempt from the NCB 1000 only if they receive an “S” on their transcript or pass all parts of the state required exam.
Remediation Fee
Students are assessed a 75.00 fee to defray cost associated with remediation students who fail to pass one section of the state required exam (THEA or an approved alternative test). The fee is collected and applied to the NCB 1000 lab which is the STING Success Peer Mentor Program.
