Dr. Robin Robinson, History Professor
Previous employment in the airline industry availed Dr. Robinson with many interesting and enlightening international experiences. Visits to Mexico and South America awakened his interest in the people, history, and culture of Latin America to the point that he returned to graduate school, earned a Ph.D. from Arizona State University, and married a Brazilian. As a proud Texan, Dr. Robinson is pleased to be in Brownsville where he can eagerly pursue his research interests in the US/Mexico border and enjoy the Valley’s unique culture.
To understand fully history, Dr. Robinson believes that one must study it in a global and contemporary context. In other words, history does not occur in geographic isolation and today is linkable to the past. He conducts class in a casual, conversational manner with emphasis on reading and writing.
Dr. Robinson’s hobbies include playing tennis and visiting the island on Sundays.
Karon L. Jahn, Associate Professor, Communication
I enjoy teaching undergraduate students who are excited about making commitments to their future. My twenty years of teaching and university administrative experience in Alaska, Colorado, Hawai’i, Peoples Republic of China, and Texas has taught me that students who see their goals for the future as part of a larger world view are successfully happy.
Creating shared partnerships with friends and family, local community outreach personnel, and global organizations is my favorite way to teach and mentor students in my speech and communication courses. I believe that students learn best by practicing—early on—the skills learned in the classroom. I encourage each student to bring his or her individual strengths to a team approach. My satisfaction, as a teacher, comes from celebrating our unique selves while accomplishing, as a team, goals that affect thousands beyond our classroom walls.
I also enjoy team-teaching and brainstorming innovative ways to reach today’s student population. UTB/TSC is a unique institution with many exciting opportunities to engage students in a purposeful life!
