The first year of college is a major period
of adjustment for students. It is a time
when students are presented with new
experiences and opportunities to achieve
academic success. It also is a period where
they discover career interests, become
involved in campus life, and meet people
from diverse backgrounds.
The Leadership and Mentorship
Program was created by the Student Affairs
Division as part of a continuing effort to
help students feel connected to the campus
and local community. If students are
comfortable with their peers, professors,
and surroundings, they are more likely to
remain at the University and graduate. In
order to create strong relationships between
students and faculty, a mentoring program
has been established within leadership
seminars that serve as the cornerstone for
the program. The University of Texas at
Brownsville wants students to grow and
develop personally and academically
throughout their entire academic experience
and works especially hard through the
Leadership and Mentorship Program to improve
and enhance their first-year experience.
MENTORING
The mentoring aspect of our program inspire
student to achieve excellence and seek out
opportunities to display leadership. In
order to guide students through this
process, LAMP pairs each student with a well
qualified mentor that acts not only as a
role model but also as a resource to that
student. LAMP understands that the
transition into college life can be tough,
but with the right motivation and
encouragement, this transition is made
easier. If you're an inspired student
looking not only to accomplish academic
excellence, but also have a great time, then
LAMP is the program for you.

LEADERSHIP
Not only does LAMP provide you with a
qualified mentor, but it also offers
students the chance to learn great lessons
in leadership. Throughout both the fall and
spring semester you will have the
opportunity to attend professional
leadership workshops presented by LAMP
mentors, UTB/TSC staff and faculty, and
outside community leaders. These workshops
are very enlightening as well as
inspirational and will equip you with the
leadership skills you will need as a student
for your future career. You will also have
the privilege of attending the Learning To
Lead Institute, which is a biannual
conference hosted by LAMP every semester.
For your participation in the program and
the institute, you will be awarded
certificates of completion and will be able
to include your participation and training
in LAMP on your resume.
THE DIVISION OF STUDENTS AFFAIRS
The Division of
Student Affairs seeks to create and
implement programs, services, and activities
that are consistent with the mission,
educational purposes, location, and student
characteristics of The University of Texas
at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College
(UTB/TSC). These programs, services, and
activities enhance student learning and
personal development. They are designed to
attract and retain students by offering the
following: a high quality of campus life;
support for academic achievement;
opportunities for leadership development;
opportunities for social, cultural, and
ethical development; support for wellness;
and opportunities for career planning.
The Leadership and Mentorship Program (LAMP)
will attempt to accomplish this through
promoting student awareness of campus and
community resources, providing support for
new students, and fostering students who are
independent, motivated, academically
successful, and contributing members of the
university community. The main goal of LAMP
is to increase retention of students by
providing incoming freshman and new transfer
students an opportunity to learn from
mentors who serve as coaches, role models,
and advisors.
LAMP shall achieve this goal through
structured mentoring of
new students and with the support of the
university community.
Our program
composes of three components that work
together to increase student retention at
UTB/TSC. The first component of LAMP works
with students through a mentorship program
where upper level students mentor incoming
freshman. The second component of LAMP
includes a leadership program, developed in
collaboration with our own campus students,
faculty and staff, which develop and train
our local student leaders. In the third
component, LAMP brings to UTB/TSC a staff
and faculty mentoring program which aligns
faculty and staff volunteer mentors with
incoming freshmen. |
