Student Legal Services
Student Legal Services is a resource available to students of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. The goal is to provide accurate legal advice to students regarding an impending legal matter or to address a specific concern.
Types of applicable cases
- Traffic tickets or other Violations of the Texas Transportation Code.
- Criminal cases that are classified as a misdemeanor.
- Filing of Protective Orders.
- Reporting Bad Checks.
- Civil cases that can be heard in small claims court.
- Tenant / Landlord disputes.
- Consumer concerns or complaints.
- Cases of Identity Theft.
Limitations
Student Legal Services will not provide assistance for any of the following:
- Criminal cases that are classified as a felony.
- Criminal cases where an affiliate of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is named as a victim or complainant.
- Civil cases where an affiliate of The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is named as an affiant or complainant.
To make an appointment
Any student who would like to consult the university attorney for legal advice should contact the Dean of Students Office located in the Student Union 1.20 or by calling 882-5141 to make an appointment. Students must be currently enrolled and be able to present a valid student identification card.
