Tax Information

International students on an F-1 visa who worked during the previous year need to file an Income Tax Return Form 1040-NREZ before the 15th of April. The form is available at the University library or at the local Post Office. .It comes with an instruction booklet or visiting the IRS website:  www.irs.gov. This form must be completed correctly and mailed with the W-2 form provided by the office of Human Resources or Payroll. If the student does not get the W-2 form in the mail, the student must collect one at the Human Resources office (Cortez Bldg). The Income Tax Return Form must be mailed to the following address:

There are no exceptions to this requirement. It is a federal law of the United States and we must obey it. In most cases the student will receive money back for previously paid taxes. This will depend on the treaty United States has with the country the student is from.

Social security number must be written in all the forms. The forms must be sent to the address written on the instruction booklet.

Student must keep copies of all the forms sent to the Internal Revenue Service. These forms must be kept for a period of 7 years.

Basic Advice

  • If you are not a U.S citizen or permanent resident, you must file taxes and use the form 1040 NR EZ
  • If you worked for any length of time during the previous year, you must file an income tax form, regardless of the amount of earnings.
  • Scholarships are also considered income and must be included in your report.
  • If you and your spouse (who is also a non resident) worked at any point during the previous year, each one of you must use a separate form.
  • Write your social security number in all the documents you send.
  • Staple all the attachments to the 1040NREZ form.
  • Make photocopies of everything you send to the IRS. You must keep these forms for at least 7 years.
  • Income tax form must be mailed not later than April 15. If you are late, you may be charged interest and penalty fines. Mail the forms to the address located on page 3 of the instruction booklet.
