Unless you possess a visa that allows you to attend school here (must be presented to the Admissions Office with the UTB/TSC application), you must apply for a student visa.
The following steps must be completed by all incoming international students applying for a student F-1 or M-1 VISA
Steps for Admission:
- Admissions application and required documents such as: transcripts, final grades and/or high school certificate in English and must be submitted to the Admissions Office. - Take TOEFL exam or an approved alternative. For more information visit: htttp://www.ets.org
- Take THEA Exam or an approved alternative test. For more information and reservation visit: PATRICK.MCGEHEE@UTB.EDU (Note: you may take this exam upon arrival with prior approval and reservation). As an alternative, you may take SAT must score at least (1070 with 500 and 500 scores) or ACT (Comp.23 & 19 and 19 each scores). Any of these scores or higher will exempt you from the above mentioned tests (THEA). For details contact Larissa Guijosa.
- Contact admissions office to request a (program of study) → DEGREE PLAN admissions@utb.edu or (956) 882-8295.
Apply for an I-20 form (letter of eligibility) to the Admissions Office with the following documents:
- Send a copy of a valid passport with a validity of at least 5 years
- Complete and notarize the “Affidavit of Financial Support” (blank form included at the bottom) sorry No faxes for more information contact: admissions@utb.edu 956-882-7811 (Tandy Office 115).
- Provide an original bank statement “Financial Resources” (should not be older than 90 days as of the first class day), must be dated or an original signed letter (with the bank’s letterhead) indicating the minimum financial funds available: send all three documents( #2 copy, # 3, original & #4 original) to:

The following are estimated costs for two semesters or one academic year
The approximate cost for 12 credit hours (4 courses) is $5,200.00 dollars (one semester)

* Attention athletes and recipients of competitive scholarships
Student not receiving a full paid scholarship is responsible for the tuition difference and living expenses. Scholarships usually do not cover tuition or living expenses for summer.
Ex: Total of Tuition: $17,200
Total of Scholarship: $15,000
Student responsible: $2,000
* Students under a full scholarship should bring $ 1,000 dollars for personal expenses.
- After steps 1-4 have been met, an I-20 will be issued as well as a letter of completion with ID # and PIN. Via e-mail. Provide us with a complete physical address; so we may send you the I-20 upon approval.
Note: The address CAN NOT be a P.O. BOX.
- With the I-20 in hand and pay the fee of $100.00 U.S. dollars mandatory SEVIS fee with a credit card. Visit their site for further details: www.fmjfee.com

Additional Procedures
- Make appointment with the American Embassy/Consulate after obtaining the I-20 (Letter of Eligibility). - Upon arrival to Brownsville, Texas, please report to International/Multicultural Student Services Office, located in MRC North #103 (956)-882-7092/7983. Present results of THEA or alternative tests and receive academic advisement and a degree plan if this has not been previously requested.
- Present passport with all the immigration documentation to the Admissions Office – Tandy Building #115. In turn, copies of these documents will be made and records will be updated on SEVIS file.
- Register for classes after completing all admission steps.
- Pay for classes and health insurance at the Business Office Tandy #107. Please consult the deadlines, Tuition and Fees section of the Student’s Course Schedule → http://pubs.utb.edu/course-schedule/
- Obtain student school Identification card with statement of charges (receipt for payment of classes) at the Library.
