Health Insurance

MANDATORY HEALTH INSURANCE FOR
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

All international students will be automatically charged for comprehensive health insurance every semester at the time of registration.  The cost of the insurance is in the amount of the premium approved by the U.T. System health insurance plan.  This charge may not be paid in installments.  Mexican nationals are exempt from this requirement excluding those on J-1 visa.

Students who already have health insurance must present the following documentation to obtain a waiver.

A waiver form (to be presented at cashier’s window) may be obtained by providing proof of an acceptable alternate insurance to the Student Health Services (Cortez 217, Ph. 882-3896) with the following documentation;

  • Medical Insurance I.D. card with insurer’s name, policy coverage effective and expiration dates.
  • Information of insurance coverage or web site.

Insurance must include:

    • Medical evacuation ($10,000.00)
    • Repatriation (minimum $7,500.00)
    • Major medical ($100,000.00)

If carrying a foreign insurance, document must be in English with monetary coverage (marks, yen, etc.) converted into U.S. dollars.

  • If insurance coverage does not include evacuation and repatriation, these must be purchased separately at the cashier’s window.
  • Must present the receipt for the extra coverage at the Student Health Services (Cortez 217, Ph. 882-3896) to obtain the waiver. Waivers are only valid for one academic year.

Reimbursement for health insurance fee will be available up to the 12th class day. After this date no reimbursement will be given to the student for the current semester.

U.S. residents who wish to purchase health insurance may contact the Student Health Services director for more information.

Note:     All international students from Mexico who attend UTB/TSC will be excluded from the required health coverage, WITH the exception of any student with a J-1 visa.  Student must show proof of insurance under USIA regulations.
