Frequently Asked Questions
Q: The counselor I saw referred me to a psychiatrist for an evaluation for the need for medication. What does this mean?
A: This means that your counselor may be concerned with your safety or ability to function. You may benefit from medication that your counselor is unable to prescribe. Many psychological problems, including depression and anxiety, have a biological component that medication may help to manage.
Q: I’m worried about my friends and family finding out about my problems. That would be embarrassing. Who will see my records?
A: All services received in the Counseling Center are private and confidential. In order for others to have access to your records, you must sign a consent form giving permission for this access.
Q: I’ve been depressed and can’t quit crying. I’m afraid to seek counseling services for fear someone will think I’m crazy. Should I come in?
A: Absolutely. Counseling services are for anyone who needs to talk with someone when life seems too difficult. Whether it’s adjustment to campus life, feelings of depression or anxiety, relationship problems, or loss of a loved one, you do not have to face all of these stressors on your own.
