Welcome to the UTB/TSC Chess Program
Community Service
- The UTB/TSC Chess Team and Chess Program Staff offer free community outreach chess classes to area students on a regular basis.
- UTB/TSC chess team members and coaches are available to visit area schools. We will be glad to discuss educational opportunities available at UTB, relate personal experiences in chess, and provide motivational support. Please contact Russell Harwood at the UTB chess office (956-882-5761) to arrange a visit.
- During 2005, Assistant Chess Coach Russell Harwood provided chess sets and instruction to several schools in Northern Mexico. Efforts are underway to continue and expand this program.
- During the fall of 2006, GM Gilberto Hernandez and Russell Harwood visited La Ciudad de los Niño’s School in Monterrey, MX to assist in their project to implement chess as part of their curriculum. In May of 2007, they returned to Monterrey with Mr. Jerry Nash, Director of Scholastic Chess for the US Chess Federation to continue and expand this collaboration. We will continue to assist in this worthwhile endeavor as this project develops.
