Coach's Corner
Welcome!
I would like to send a greeting to the chess community in the Valley and Northern Mexico.
Since I arrived, I realized this is a very special place for chess. It surprised me to see such large numbers of children and parents involved in the chess arena. Because of this, there is a very high level of play, which has resulted in many state and national championships. The interest is encouraged by leaders in the BISD and surrounding districts, as well as the UTB/TSC President Juliet Garcia, who continuously supports our program.
Our goal is to be one of the best collegiate chess programs. This is why we work to bring local and international students with a high level of chess, including titled players, into our team. We believe these efforts will help improve ultimately the RGV players’ level of play.
A positive work and team environment allows an increase in development for our chess team. The planning of the classes according to the needs of each team member, taking into account their strengths and weaknesses, allows me to help my students become better at chess.
I am sure we will continue to have even better results than what has been seen in national and international events throughout the area. One of our team members has just recently become a Grand Master and another team member will be a Woman Grand Master soon. This is not a common occurrence in collegiate chess. We are very proud of the possibilities that will surely enhance our team in short time.
I am very happy to be a part of the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. I look forward to using my position here to contribute to the area’s chess community.
Regards,
GM Gilberto Hernandez
