2007 Spring Semester Basketball League
The Campus Recreation Department held its annual Spring Semester Basketball League which took place at the Manuel Garza Gym. A total of 21 teams participated in the league, the most ever by the Campus Recreation Department, and allowed over 100 participants participated in a 3 on 3 Basketball League that would finish with a tournament held on the last Friday of February 2007. The total included 16 men’s teams and 5 co-ed
teams that would battle it out to enter the tournament as only the top 10 teams would advance in the Men’s Division while all would enter the tournament in the Co-ed Division.
After all the games were played out, there would be two teams in the final championship game which would not consist of the defending champions of last years’ tournament. The Blue Devils headed by their captain Daniel Martinez would enter the championship game with good momentum as they would face UTB Most Wanted head by their captain Luis Uresti. The ball game started as most championships would, basket for basket with UTB Most Wanted slightly gaining advantage toward the latter part of the game. Some sharp shooting by Manny Vasquez and some acrobatic lay ups by Bobby Gaytan. Vicente Esquivel kept the Blue Devils in the game until falling into foul trouble toward the end of the contest. He would foul out with the score, UTB Most Wanted 19 and Blue Devils 18, which allowed UTB Most Wanted to end the game 23 to 21 over the Blue Devils. Contributing to the defensive efforts and offensive rebounding were Dave Smith, Alex Salinas, and Jaime San Miguel.
In our Co-ed contest, two teams never having played in a championship contest were battling it out in the championship game. The team Lil- H-Town, consisting of mainly Health and Human Performance students versus team Outlaws which consisted of mostly of staff from our Information Systems Department. The game was a see-saw battle that had both teams play their hearts out to winning the trophy. Lil-H-town had some clutch shots made by Miguel Nunez, Eloy Cano and Sara De La Rosa. On the opposite side of the ball, the Outlaws had some help from Albert Perez and Erica Hernandez but would not be enough for the tough defensive effort by Lil-H-Town toward the final ticks of the game having Lil-H-Town win the competition 20 to 17.
We would like to send a big thanks to all the participants that were apart of the 2007 Campus Recreation Intramural Basketball League and Tournament. We appreciate all the support and involvement within our ongoing Intramural program that strives to endorse campus involvement, sportsmanship, and personal accountability which will support the success of our student body both in and outside of the classroom. Campus Recreation would like to encourage all teams that participated and those who did not, to participate in our up coming events. Be active, stay active, and we will see you soon!
