ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION METHODS
SUMMER II 2010
Teaching Environmental Science is a course that provides K-12 teachers with an opportunity to learn how to teach environmental science; learn environmental science content; and about the environmental resources within their community.
Throughout the course the students will participate in field activities that help them to apply teaching methods and evaluation techniques that are appropriate for assessing experiential learning activities.
Students will have an opportunity to visit environmental agencies and meet with environmental education providers to learn first hand about their their role in maintaining and promoting a healthy environment. The most exciting part of the course is the field trips taken by teachers and future teachers to actual environmental sites. Here they see what these organizations and individuals are doing and gain first-hand knowledge and experience in a variety of habitats.
During Summer II the course will include a field trip to Rancho del Cielo or Cielito in Mexico. This class will be limited to no more than 15 participants. This course requires that individuals be in good health and be able to endure climbing and hiking in rough terrain. Classes will be offered in the Summer and Fall without the Mexico field trip.
Funds will only be available to cover the tuition portion of the class; however, students would have to pay the travel, lodging, and meals. The cost will be approximately $500. This portion must be paid in full by mid-June 2010.
I will offer later in the spring comments from participants who attended the trips. These will be posted on the TRC website.
