The Reading Marathon is On!

The UTB/TSC School of Education is gunning to carve their name into the “Guinness World Records” book. As part of UTB/TSC’s “Coming of Age” celebration, a team from the department will attempt to read for 200 straight hours at the “Longest Reading Aloud Marathon by a Team,” starting at noon, Wednesday, March 21, through Thursday, March 29, in the Education and Business Complex - Elementary Demo Lab - Room EDBC 1.212.

We want to invite the public to participate in an event that will receive world recognition. As part of the University’s 15th Anniversary Celebration, six members of the School of Education will attempt to break a Guinness World Record™ for the Longest Reading Aloud Marathon by a Team.

Research Symposium Highlights

The month of March was designated as part of the official university anniversary year celebration for the UTB/TSC School of Education. The School of Education planned a special symposium and mini conference scheduled for March 2-3, 2007.

Keynote speaker for Friday evening's opening ceremony was James Crawford, a best-selling author and nationally recognized advocate for English language learners. Saturday's mini conference - symposium included multiple breakout sessions, lunch, and a guest speaker. Teachers attending the symposium - mini conference were eligible to receive Continuing Professional Education Units.

Eduardo Cancino
Assistant Superintendent for School and Program Improvement with the Hidalgo Independent School District

Mr. Eduardo Cancino has seventeen years in public education and currently serves as Assistant Superintendent for School and Program Improvement with the Hidalgo Independent School District. He has also served as an educational consultant for Education Service Center Region One, Southwestern Region of the College Board, and adjunct faculty at South Texas Community College and University of Texas – Pan American. Cancino has extensive experience leading school districts in system-wide implementation of Curriculum Alignment and Data-Driven Instruction, and is currently completing Doctoral work on Educational Leadership.
