2. Proposed revision to HOOP 5.2.4.2. -Graduate Committee
The committee reviewed the suggestion from the Dean’s Council to include the following sentences: “The graduate student shall not be present when faculty personnel recommendations are being considered. The graduate student shall be selected by the President based upon the joint recommendation of the Dean of Graduate School, the Executive Committee, and the Academic Senate.
After discussion, the committee approved the following revision:
The faculty membership of the Graduate Committee shall be selected by the President from those qualified to teach graduate courses and based on joint recommendations by the Executive Committee and the Academic Senate. One graduate student member shall serve on the committee as a non-voting member. The graduate student shall be selected by the President based upon the recommendations of the Dean of Graduate School and the Academic Senate. The Dean of Graduate School and the Academic Senate will base their recommendations on nominations from the Graduate Student Association.
3. CAR-College of Science, Mathematics and Technology (1st reading)

Both courses were approved for a 1st reading, conditional on the following:
The CAR must be approved by the college graduate curriculum committee
and that the word “thesis” be added under course description.
4. Proposed Graduate Catalog language changes for the Master of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies (M.S.I.S.) program
Dr. McNeely proposed the following catalog language changes in order to incorporate both ISCI courses into the M.S.I.S. program as a supporting field.
1.) Insert the following text after the introduction and before the general description of the M.S.I.S. degree (p. 55 of 1999-2001 catalog):
36-Hour Thesis/Non Thesis Program
2.) Insert the following text after the general description of the M.S.I.S. degree and before the list of Supporting Fields (p. 55 of the 1999-2001 catalog):
Thesis
As part of their graduate program, students may choose the option of writing a thesis, for which they will receive six hours of graduate credit. Those who take this option must select a thesis committee, composed of a committee chairperson and two other members of the graduate faculty, to approve the topic and to assist in the preparation of the thesis. (See thesis-nonthesis option under “Academic Information”.) Students must pass an oral defense of the completed thesis. Students selecting this option will register for ISCI 7300 and 7301 after they have completed their coursework.
3.) Include the following in the list of Supporting Fields (p. 55 of the 1999-2001 catalog):
Interdisciplinary Science
The committee approved these catalog changes.
5. HOOP 7.2.2-Graduate Faculty
The committee revisited the HOOP language regarding the eligibility of ABDs for graduate faculty membership at the Associate level. The committee agreed not to take action on this matter. It was suggested that the entire HOOP 7.2.2 needs to be reviewed and rewritten.
Language change was approved for the HOOP section that deals with the
Qualifications of the Special Member (approved in the previous meeting
on October 26, 2000).
3. A Special Member may:
a. Teach graduate courses with written verification from the
graduate department involved and upon recommendation of the School/College
Dean and the Dean of Graduate Studies.
b. Serve on graduate thesis and examination committees with written
verification from the department and on recommendation by the School/College
Dean and the Dean of Graduate Studies.
c. Direct particular theses with written justification from the involved
graduate department and upon recommendation of the School/College Dean
and the Dean of Graduate Studies. Special members of the Graduate
Faculty may not constitute a majority of the committee supervising a thesis.

New Business
1. CAR-College of Science, Mathematics and Technology (1st reading)

This course was approved for a 1st reading with the following conditions: the CAR must be approved by the college graduate curriculum committee and it needs to specify the course(s) that will meet the prerequisite for this class (e.g., 4000 or higher, or graduate level only).
2. CAR-College of Science, Mathematics and Technology (1st reading)
MFET 5301-new course
This course was approved for a 1st reading with the following conditions:
the CAR must be approved by the college graduate curriculum committee.
The prerequisite needs to be specified and a clear course description needs
to be provided.
3. Dean's Report
On November 17th the Office of Graduate Studies will host a lunch for
UTB/TSC students about to finish their undergraduate degrees. Post card
invitations have been mailed to the students. Each school and college
have been asked to have a representative present during the lunch to answer
the students’ questions about our graduate programs.
