1. Jon Steingass, candidate, Developmental Education Coordinator: Mr. Steingass presented a plan for coordination of developmental education and answered questions posed by Deans’ Council members.
2. Spring Faculty and Staff Meetings: Victor Fuhro led a review of the calendar of activities for the week of January 4. Members suggested that meetings not be held on Monday, January 4 so that deans, department chairs and advisors could be available to assist students completing late registration. Ray Rodrigues asked that the chairs of faculty search committees meet with the director of Human Resources during that week and that all the search committees meet that week as well. Times for these meetings will be incorporated into the schedule.
3. Faculty Development: Ray asked what topics might be appropriate for faculty development opportunities in the Spring. Members suggested research discussions (e.g., reports from those who received research enhancement grants last year); distance learning presentations with demonstrations by our faculty; writing-, speaking-, and computing-across-the-curriculum workshops; and perhaps another guest speaking engagement by Richard Paul.
4. Fiscal Year 2000 Budget Preparation: Victor gave an update on budget preparation activities, noting that the computer system that supports budget preparation wasn’t working properly.
5. Deans/Chairs Agenda (12/4/1998): Topics for the meeting will include the scholarship of teaching, and updates on general education, registration, spring faculty and staff meetings, and the budget development timeline.
6. Late Registration Coverage: Members agreed that it was essential that academic offices be staffed throughout the day and into the early evening on January 4, which is the last day of late registration.
7. General Education and Dual Enrollment Updates: Carolyn Green reported on the progress made in the development of the core curriculum proposal. Proposals concerning the humanities had been finalized. The proposal was to be distributed to the Undergraduate Curriculum Committee members at their meeting in the afternoon, with a request that the proposal be taken back to their schools and colleges for discussion and feedback to the task force. The task force also asked that the proposal be discussed at the school and college meetings to be held during the week of January 4. Carolyn reported that we are working out the details for dual enrollment offerings for the Spring at San Benito, Port Isabel, Los Fresnos, Rio Hondo, and Brownsville ISD.
8. Faculty Searches: Ray distributed a copy of the ad that will run in the Chronicle of Higher Education and urged that search committees be ready to begin their work immediately after we return from the holiday break.
9. HEAF Funds: Wayne Lewis distributed a copy of the HEAF funds requests
and led a discussion of how priorities should be set in distributing the
funds.
