1. Sample Policies for Emeritus Status – (Ronnau)
John Ronnau distributed Emeritus faculty policies from four institutions. Options and implications presented by these various policies were discussed. It was decided that this issue will be referred by the Provost to the Academic Senate with a request that a HOOP regarding Emeritus rank be developed by that body.
2. Departmental Blocks on Graduate Courses – (Ronnau)
John Ronnau distributed the list of all UTB/TSC graduate and UG courses currently designated with departmental blocks. He raised the concern that students attempting to register during Arena ran into these blocks but there was no recourse available to the student nor registration personnel. The Deans will ask each of their departments to review the blocked courses to determine if the blocks are warranted.
3. NISOD Awards – (Ronnau)
John Ronnau distributed the supporting materials, which had been submitted
for the NISOD Awards. The nominations were unanimously approved by
the Deans’ Council. The nominees are:
Dr. Marvin G. Lovett, Business Administration
Mr. Alfredo Muñoz, Biology
Dr. Lucy Willis, Modern Languages
Mr. Sessia Wyche, Mathematics
4. AP Test Score Acceptance (McGehee)
Dr. McGehee and Karen Stowe distributed a list of the UTB/TSC courses
currently approved for Advanced Placement (AP) credit. A list of
courses approved by UT-Austin was provided for comparison. The Deans’
Council was informed that there was particular interest expressed by students
for additional AP courses to be added in computer science, biology,
and art.
5. HOOP Policy 7.4.4--Summer School Employment (Rodrigues)
The Provost informed the Deans’ Council that the Vice Presidents have expressed concern regarding provision B3d. of the proposed Summer School Employment policy. This provision pertains to the course of action to be followed if a difference of opinion arises regarding appointment of summer school faculty. The deans agreed with the opinions of the Vice Presidents. Following discussion it was agreed that the policy will be referred back to the Academic Senate.
6. HOOP Educator Preparation Committee (Pena)
Following discussion minor revisions were made in the draft policy. The proposal will be revised to comply with HOOP format and resubmitted for review.
7. Certifying Graduation Requirements – (Rodrigues)
The deans felt that neither chairs nor deans should be responsible for
certifying that students have met graduation requirements until the
current
Student Information System allows online verification of whether students
have
met graduation requirements. They also recognize that the Advising
Center is
not staffed to perform this function. Therefore, they agree that
Student
Affairs should continue to perform those graduation checks.
8. Handbook for Part-time Faculty (Fuhro)
A draft version of a Handbook for Part-Time Faculty was distributed. Deans were asked to closely examine it and provide feedback regarding its contents and organization. Following the Deans’ review, the draft handbook will be submitted to Deans and Directors, followed by Academic Senate. Eventually, representatives of the part-time faculty will be asked to review it, also, before it is distributed.
9. Enrollment Numbers for Spring 2000 – (Lerma)
Cindy Lerma distributed a summary of Spring 2000 enrollment figures. Preliminary numbers show a small overall increase in enrollment.
10. Medical Assistance Graduates – (Holt)
Dean Holt reported that the first cohort of Medical Assistance students (18) recently graduated.
Meeting adjourned at 11:25 A.M.
