Present: Carolyn Green (presiding), Victor Fuhro, Mimosa Stephens, Sylvia Peña, Betsy Boze, Farhat Iftekharuddin, Jim Holt
1. Closed Sections: Sylvia Peña reported that several sections of Kinesiology had already closed and that space/field limitations made adding additional sections difficult. Members suggested adding sections of lecture-based classes (e.g., Concepts of Fitness for Life) and activity classes that don’t require fields or specially-equipped facilities (e.g., walking, jogging).
2. Faculty Searches: Victor Fuhro reminded members of the November 13 deadline to submit requests to advertise. The requests (using the Oct. 97 revised form) should be sent to the budget office. Position descriptions for use on the Human Resources web page should be attached to the requests.
3. Budget Training: Victor reminded members that he would be putting the Academic Affairs budget into the computer system. Budge input training will not be necessary.
4. Courses with Built-in Labs: Victor led a discussion of computer problems encountered when dealing with classes with built-in labs. Examples include Geology classes and field-based courses in education. (To register for Historical Geology, for example, a student would register for GEOL 1404.01 and either GEOL 1404.91 or GEOL 1401.92. The student would be charged for a 4 sch course.) Carolyn Green will investigate whether these courses could be changed so that the lab is separate (e.g., with the student registering for a 3-hour lecture course and a 1-hour lab course).
5. Chairs to Department Heads: Members discussed various scenarios for establishing department head positions. Victor will develop compensation estimates for the following scenarios: (1) compensation based on faculty salary plus a fixed increment derived from the compensation for a 12-month administrative position and (2) compensation based on a fixed amount for a 12-month administrative position.
6. Online Requisitions: Victor distributed a memo concerning problems encountered with online requisitions. The two basic problems are that requisitions requiring more than one level of authorization get caught in a loop in the system and that the requisitions don’t have the supporting documentation attached to them. Given those difficulties, members agreed that the online requisition capability should be used with caution.
7. HEAF Funds: Carl Lansford has completed the collection of HEAF fund requests. Members asked that Wayne Lewis present the Academic Affairs requests at the next Deans’ Council meeting.
8. Minnie Piper Award Nominations: The Academic Deans recommended that
Denise Joseph be nominated for the award.
