Photographic Essay by Gene

During the summer of 2002 I traveled to the Guatemalan Highlands in an attempt record traditional Mayan dances. What 500 years of Conquest and subjugation could not accomplish, modernization is doing. Acculturation and ladinization is proceeding rapidly, with the resultant loss of many traditions. What follows is a photographic essay which tries to document these customs. There is still a lot of editing of photographs and narration yet to be done, but the raw data is here.
For those concerned with technicalities, the camera used, except where indicated otherwise, was a Nikon FE2. These images have been scanned at web resolution. You may use these photographs for educational purposes as long as credit is given to the author.
