MEDIA
RESOURCES GUIDE
The Office
of News and Information is developing a Media Resources Guide. This guide,
which will be distributed to media will be
posted on-line, and will list UTB/TSC faculty and staff who may be called upon
for interviews or speaking engagements.
With so much information available to us through TV, radio, cable channels
and the internet, the news media is often looking for local angles to
explain to our community how world and national issues affect them. For
instance, last week we had a reporter call looking for a sociologist to
talk about what could happen to our local human services agencies if
federal grants start drying up.
We are looking not only for faculty to list their area of academia, but
also staff to list their scope of expertise, which could range from Texas
financial aid packages to government compliance to distance education
technology. Also, consider any professional or community associations you
may belong to. On a slow news day, a reporter may be interested in doing a
feature on native plants or genealogy research.
As a member of the Media Resource Guide, the most important thing to
remember is that you should respond to reporters’ inquiries as soon as
possible. They are often working on stories that are due the same day.
Prompt responses will increase the credibility of the Guide. In the
booklet, we will list the employee’s name, title, area of interest,
primary phone number, secondary phone number (please indicate if this is a
home number or cell number) and e-mail address.
It is our goal to make the Media Resources Guide as comprehensive as
possible. We would like for our local news media to think of UTB/TSC first when
they are looking for local sources. We know of the great talent we have
here, and this is an important way our institution can benefit the
community it serves.
The Office of News and Information can also you help in preparing for
media interviews. Please feel free to call Letty Fernandez at extension 8231.
