Dr. Michael Quantz is a nationally recognized leading advocate for music education through the study of classical guitar. He has presented numerous guitar education clinics for Texas school districts and the Texas Music Educators Association Conference. He is also the creator/director of the largest annual guitar ensemble festival in the U.S. focusing on student performers. He has many years of experience in performance adjudication and competition administration, having judged the Guitar Foundation of America (GFA) International Solo Competition (Miami), the Texas Classical Guitar Competition (Dallas), the Beatty Foundation Guitar Competition (Washington, DC), and many Texas University Interscholastic League contests. He has served as the director of GFA’s Education Initiative, Ensemble Showcase, and its Youth Competition since 2005. Previous to his position as a professor of music at the University of Texas at Brownsville, he was the director of Guitar Studies at the Lopez Fine Arts Academy in Brownsville, Texas. During his tenure there, the College Board and the J. Paul Getty Trust selected him as the Site Coordinator for a multi-year project entitled: The Role of the Arts in Unifying the High School Curriculum. He has also enjoyed notable success developing the award winning guitar division at the University of Texas at Brownsville into a vigorous and highly respected university guitar program for both guitar educators and performers.
“ His execution brought the music to life…The
sound he created from the guitar captivated the
audience”
