Financial Need-Based Awards

Many scholarships are need-based awards. Financial need is defined as the difference between a student's cost of education and what the family/individual is expected to contribute. In order to be considered for need-based awards, students must complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available at the Financial Aid Office, Tandy 206 or online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.

Assistance to Non-Resident/International Students

A non-resident student who receives a competitive scholarship of at least $1,000 for the academic year may be eligible to pay the in-state resident tuition rate for the period of time covered by the scholarship, not to exceed 12 months. In order to be eligible for the tuition waiver, the student must compete with other students for the scholarship, including Texas residents. The scholarship must be awarded by an Official University Scholarship Committee.

Scholarship Scams

The Federal Trade Commission provides information to help students avoid scholarship scams. FTC warns students to beware of companies that make any of the following claims or information requests:

- "The scholarship is guaranteed or your money back."
- "You can't get this information anywhere else."
- "May I have your credit card or bank account number to hold this     scholarship?"
- "We'll do all the work."
- "The scholarship will cost some money."
- "You've been selected by a national foundation to receive a     scholarship." An alternative is "You're a finalist" in a contest you've     never entered.

For more information about scholarship scams, visit The Federal Trade Commission website or call their toll-free phone number at 1-877-FTC-HELP.

Thank you Letters

Students are strongly encouraged to express their appreciation to their scholarship donors by sending a thank you note or letter. Expressing gratitude to donors for their interest and support of education is an important part of receiving a scholarship. When donors know that their gifts are making a difference, they are encouraged to continue their support.
