Dr. Heise studies the fate of terrestrial organic matter in marine and estuarine systems. The sediments and fossils found in these systems insight to the history of the ecosystem.
She has conducted research in the Bahamas and throughout the Gulf of Mexico. Currently, her research is focused on monitoring the restoration of the Bahia Grande estuary. Bahia Grande is a wind-driven tidal flat adjacent to Lower Laguna Madre in South Texas. The natural water flow to the estuary was restricted by the construction of the Brownsville Ship Channel during the 1930's. In July 2005, a pilot channel was opened, thus water flow has been improved. Plans are in place to build additional interior channels and to widen the existing pilot channel in the near future. |
