Higher education tuition costs have increased substantially over the years.  The College of Liberal Arts and the Department of Criminal Justice seeks to provide students who achieve excellence in the classroom by providing scholarship opportunities to students.  This page summarizes three scholarships available to students in the criminal justice program at the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College. 

 

 

                                      Scholarship Information

Keith A. Ferguson Scholarship for Criminal Justice

In January of 2004, Sergeant Keith A Ferguson died of a heart attack while running to respond to another officer’s call for help. A 17 year veteran of the NYPD and a member of the city’s elite Hercules Counter Terrorism Team, Sgt. Ferguson was only 38 years old. To honor her son, Sonya Cunningham (a member of the School of Nursing Faculty) created this scholarship. Each year two fundraising events are held: one in New York City where participants walk or run across the Brooklyn Bridge and the other on the UTB/TSC campus.

The recipient of this reward will be selected by the Criminal Justice Department Scholarship committee after all applications are reviewed.

Eligibility:

Junior or Senior Status; US citizenship or permanent resident status; enrolled full time; have a minimum GPA of 2.0; majoring in Criminal Justice or attending the Police Academy; recipients must complete 200 hours of community service with either the UTB Police Academy or with UTB Criminal Justice Department; and completed application filed before the deadline.

Application Material for the Keith A. Ferguson Scholarship

Amador R. Rodriguez Scholarship for Criminal Justice

Amador R. Rodriguez worked in the Cameron County Juvenile Department from 1971 until his death in 2000. Mr. Rodriguez served as the chief probation officer for 26 years. During his time of service, juvenile probation services expanded to include the juvenile boot camp and the alternative education program. This scholarship was established by his brother to assist a criminal justice student who is interested in the juvenile justice system.

The recipient of this reward will be selected by the Criminal Justice Department Scholarship committee after all applications are reviewed.

Eligibility:

Junior or Senior status; US citizenship or permanent resident status; enrolled full time; have a minimum GPA of 2.75; majoring in Criminal Justice; recipients must have an interest in the juvenile justice system; and completed application filed before the deadline.

Application Material for the Amador R. Rodriguez Scholarship

College of Liberal Arts Incentive Scholarship in Criminal Justice

Outstanding undergraduate students are invited to apply for the College of Liberal Arts Incentive Scholarship. Scholarships are for $1,000 pending availability of annual funding. Completed applications should be submitted to the Criminal Justice Department Office, MRCS 319. For more information, contact Dr. Patti Ross Salinas, MRCS 316, 882-8994, patti.salinas@utb.edu.

Eligibility:

Undergraduate Criminal Justice Major; 3.0 Minimum GPA; enrolling in at least 2 courses in either Summer I or Summer II, 2008; junior or senior status (60-150 credit hours earned); Texas resident (considered an “in-district” student by the Office of Admissions); and not in default on student loans.

Application Deadline: March 1, 2008.
