Crystal Olivo, Student Government Association vice president of administration, reviews a calendar of upcoming events during Tuesday's meeting.

In its last meeting of the semester, the Student Government Association discussed border wall events it sponsored and passing the torch to the organization’s newly elected leaders.

“The first event of the ‘Fall of the Wall’ was a success,” Vice President of Public Relations Ruby De La Fuente said Tuesday about students signing a mock fence that was to be brought down on Saturday on the Tandy Hall lawn. “I think it went well. … It was very exciting having people rushing to the wall and signing it.”

A forum was to take place last Thursday night, where the SGA expected about 100 people to attend and discuss the environmental, political and socioeconomic effects of the proposed border fence, which the U.S. Department of Homeland Security will build to stem illegal immigration.

School of Business Senator Rose Marie Alvarez reported on “Get Tuned Up and on the Right Track,” an Earth-Day related event that took place April 21 at the amphitheatre.

“We had 19 automotive students come to … campus and they were really willing to help work with our students, look at their cars and it was awesome,” Alvarez said.

She said 12 door prizes were given away.

The SGA also planned to plant eight trees and three small gardens in observance of Arbor Day last Friday.

SGA Adviser and Student Life Director David Mariscal asked the senate to take part in a transition meeting, scheduled last Thursday, for new members elected April 9 and 10.

Absent from Tuesday’s meeting were School of Business Senator David Benavidez, College of Liberal Arts Senator Mario Garza, College of Science, Mathematics and Technology Senator Mayra De La Tejera, Senator Pro Tem Daniel Caballero, Senators at Large Josh Moody, Jose “Frank” Orozco and Monica Villarreal.
