The UTB/TSC Men’s Golf Team took 10th place in the NAIA Region VI Championship Tournament April 21 and 22 in Lubbock.

“It was a disappointing finish because we had your ups and downs this year,” Head Coach Bobby Lucio said about the tournament. “We had some really good tournaments and others where we didn’t do as well.  But we never came together as a team, as far as everyone playing well at once. I think that was the difference here.”

Leading the team on the first day was Jones Mitchell with a score of 77-80—155; Chris Milligan scored 77-80—157; Anthony Lopez scored 81-77—158; Victor Calzada scored 83-78—161; and O.J. Moreno 83-83—160. The team shot two rounds and ended the day with a combined total of 631.

Oklahoma City University and Wayland Baptist University tied for first with a total of 574 on the first day.

On the final day of the tournament, Mitchell scored 155-77—232; Milligan scored 157-80—237; Lopez scored 158-76—234; Calzada scored 161-81—242; and Moreno 160-82—248. The Scorpions finished the tournament with a total of 945.

Oklahoma City University took first place with a total of 856, followed by Wayland Baptist University, in second and Oklahoma Christian University in third.

“The other thing is that we were playing out of our element at Lubbock,” Lucio said.

The men’s and women’s team’s final tournament of the season will be in Port St. Lucie, Fla., May 8 to 10 for the 22nd annual PGA Minority Collegiate Golf Championship.

The UTB/TSC Women’s Golf team will compete today and Tuesday in the NAIA Region VI Championship Tournament in Oklahoma City.

“The girls are playing in Oklahoma City, Rose Creek [golf course] and we played it once before, so it’s a plus,” Lucio said about the women’s upcoming tournament. “I think they are in better shape than the guys were in Lubbock, because we have seen the course before and we talked about it. We know what to expect.”
