Tuition and fees meeting
The UTB/TSC Tuition and Fee Policy Advisory Committee will discuss the status of tuition and fees at 9 a.m. Thursday in the Gorgas Hall boardroom.

STD Testing

The Valley AIDS Council will provide free and confidential testing for sexually transmitted diseases and HIV from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in Cortez Hall 237. For more information, call Student Health Services at 882-8951.

Patron of the Arts

The UTB/TSC Rio Bravo Percussion Ensemble, featuring guest soloists Dean Gronemeier and Kai Stensgaard on marimba, will perform at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Jacob Brown Auditorium. The UTB/TSC Rio Bravo Wind Ensemble will follow in concert at 8 p.m. Admission is $3. For more information, call the Patron of the Arts office at 882-7025.        

Career outreach

The Counseling Center will conduct a housing outreach from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday in the Village at Fort Brown in observance of National Career Development Month. Snacks and coffee will be served. For more information, call the center at 882-8292.

Lecture

Rainer Enrique Hamel, a professor of linguistics at the Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana in Mexico City, will present a lecture titled “Spanish, English, and Multilingualism in a Globalizing World” at 6 p.m. Thursday in the Student Union’s Gran Salon. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 882-5730.

Feed the Scorpion

The Accounting Society at UTB/TSC will create a scorpion out of empty aluminum cans from 9 a.m.-7p.m. Friday in the parking lot of the Jacob Brown Auditorium. Donors may Feed the Scorpion with aluminum cans that day. The cans will then be sold to benefit the needy. For more information, call club president David Lopez at 551-1731.

Anniversary celebration

The College of Science, Mathematics and Technology will celebrate the university’s anniversary from 3 to 10 p.m. Saturday in the Science and Engineering Technology building. Several presentations and activities are planned for CMST faculty, staff and alumni. For more information, call 882-6701.

Society Under Fire

Simon Houpt, author of “Museum of the Missing” (Sterling, 2006), will discuss the book on “Society Under Fire,” which airs at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and 3:30 p.m. Sunday on KMBH-FM (88.9) William F. Strong, a professor in the English and Communication Department, hosts the program.

Professional Women Speak

Celia Flores-Feist, an associate professor in the Chemistry and Environmental Sciences Department, will present a lecture titled “The Road Less Traveled: Women in Science” at the Professional Women Speak seminar to be held at 11 a.m. Nov. 13 in the Education and Business Complex’s Cassia Room. Athletic Fee referendum

Voting for the Athletic Fee referendum will take place from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 14-15 at the Education and Business Complex, Student Union, Cardenas Hall North and South, Tandy Hall and International Technology, Education and Commerce Campus. Reading

Rob Johnson, author of “The Lost Years of William S. Burroughs: Beats in South Texas,” will read an excerpt at 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the SET-B third-floor conference room. The event is sponsored by the Liberal Arts Graduate Student Association.   

Steal a Meal

The Catholic Campus Ministry sells a full meal for $1.50 at 11:30 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the Newman Center. For more information, call 542-3942.

Katrina relief

The UT School of Public Health Brownsville Regional Campus and other Rio Grande Valley organizations are seeking donations for Mission Mississippi, a relief effort for Hurricane Katrina victims who are still struggling. Suggested donation items include non-perishable foods, toiletries and baby items. Items can be dropped off between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. through December at the Regional Academic Health Center, located next to the Life and Health Sciences Building. Employee recreation
