Scholarships

The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans offers a $20,000 maintenance grant and a grant of one-half the tuition cost to individuals who hold a green card, or citizens who are already naturalized or the offspring of two naturalized parents. Only those who are completing or holding their bachelor’s degrees or enrolled in a graduate program are eligible. Applicants must be no older than 30 as of Nov. 1, the deadline date. The Hispanic Scholarship Fund and the Marathon Oil Corp. offer a $10,000 scholarship to students of Hispanic-American, African-American, Asian Pacific Islander-American, or American Indian/Alaskan Native heritage. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States with a valid Social Security number. Applicants must also have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher, and be a sophomore majoring in any of the following fields: civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, petroleum engineering, geology, geophysics, accounting, marketing, global procurement, supply chain management, environmental health and safety, energy management or petroleum land management, transportation and logistics and geotechnical engineering. The National Physical Science Consortium offers the Traditional NPSC Program, a two-phase, six-year fellowship, and a Dissertation Support Program. For more information, visit www.npsc.org. The deadline to apply online is Nov. 5

The National Academies offers predoctoral, dissertation and postdoctoral Ford Foundation Fellowships to U.S. citizens or nationals. Applicants must have evidence of superior academic achievement, be committed to a career in teaching and research at the college or university level, be enrolled or planning to enroll in an eligible research-based program leading to a doctor of philosophy or doctor of science degree at a U.S. educational institution. A $600 Upper-Division Employee Tuition Assistance Scholarship is offered to full-time UTB/TSC employees and faculty. Applicants must be Texas residents, must comply with Financial Aid Satisfactory Progress standards, must enroll for at least three upper-level credit hours, and must not owe a refund nor be in default status on any federal or state loan programs. The Miller Brewing Co. offers a $2,000 Federación de Futbol Scholarship to Latino students. Applicants must pursue a degree in business or related field, have and maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, be eligible for financial aid from a federal or state-funded program and maintain full-time enrollment status throughout the duration of the scholarship term. The UTB/TSC Alumni Association offers a $500 scholarship. Applicants must be members of the UTB/TSC Alumni Association, a junior, senior or graduate student, U.S. citizens or resident aliens and have a 3.0 GPA or higher. Applications are available at the Financial Assistance Office, Tandy Hall 206. The deadline to apply is Nov. 30.

The Nonprofit Sector Research Fund offers the William Randolph Hearst Endowed Fellowship for Minority Students. The $2,500-to-$5,000 fellowship is open to both undergraduates and continuing students. To apply, students must have the following: An excellent academic record, a background in the social sciences or humanities, excellent writing and communication skills, demonstrated financial need and an American citizenship. The student must also be able to intern for 10 to 15 weeks in the Washington, D.C., office of the Aspen Institute. To apply, students must send a letter of interest, including information about dates of availability for the fellowship; a resume; a transcript; a letter from the appropriate university financial aid officer certifying demonstrated financial need; and two letters of reference to: John Russell, Program Coordinator, The Aspen Institute, One Dupont Circle, Suite 700, Washington, D.C., 20036. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher, must submit an essay on who has had the greatest impact on their lives and an essay on what they hope to achieve personally and professionally after college.
