Split decision for Scorpions

The UTB/TSC Volleyball Team won one match and lost another in their third preseason tournament Sept. 9 in Laredo.

The Scorpions defeated Schreiner University in straight sets (30-24, 30-17 and 30-15). The confident volleyball team dominated the match. Middle blockers Greta Billerbeck and Lauren Bayer led the Scorpions with 10 kills and nine kills, respectively.

Setter Lindsay Madsen recorded 23 assists against Schreiner. Defensively, Billerbeck and Bayer each had four blocks. Joanna Knight also contributed with 23 digs.

The second match wasn’t as good for the Scorpions, as they fell to Texas A&M International University (21-30, 30-15, 19-30 and 13-30).

“Our confidence was a lot higher against Schreiner,” said Head Volleyball Coach Bruce Atkinson. “[A&M International] didn’t put the ball away a lot; they just kept it in play and made us make the mistake.”

Katie Japp led the attack for the Scorpions against A&M with 11 kills. Madsen posted 27 assists. Bayer contributed three blocks on the defensive side and Knight registered 25 digs.

The Scorpions were scheduled to play their first NAIA Red River Conference match against Wiley College on Saturday at home. Results were not available at press time.
