Five freshmen have been elected to the Student
Government Association.
A total of 278 students cast ballots in
Wednesday’s election. Votes were counted Thursday.
Cristina Alaniz received the highest number of
votes, 83, followed by Rose Marie Alvarez, 64; Crystal Vargas, 27;
Joel Alaffa, 18; and Mario Gomez, 17.
Fourteen candidates vied for the five
positions.
“I think we are starting to see a trend of more
people just starting to be more involved on campus and we can see it
by how many people ran,” SGA President Abraham Ponce said.
Ponce said he was “very proud” of the student
participation in the election.
To become a freshman senator, students must
have completed fewer than 30 credit hours and have a 2.0 GPA or
higher.
The new senators were sworn in during Thursday
afternoon’s SGA meeting.
“These freshman senators will stay in student
government and will contribute to the university,” Ponce said.
