Staff Senate to
award book scholarships
By Hugo Rodriguez
Staff Writer
It’s not too late for UTB/TSC staff members to
apply for a book scholarship from the Staff Senate, which plans to
award $2,000 this semester.
Any staff member under the level of director
may apply for a $100 scholarship. Applications are available from
Olga García, a member of the Staff Senate Scholarship Committee, in
Tandy Hall 125. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Sept. 29.
García said the senate held a bowling
tournament in May, where it raised $1,398, and sold about 1,000
discount tickets in July for Schlitterbahn Beach Waterpark on South
Padre Island, which netted more than $4,100—the most money it has
ever raised in an individual fund-raiser. The senate also raised
$300 by participating in the Sombrero Festival and received a $3,000
donation from the President’s Circle. The President’s Circle
supports students, faculty, and programs for which state funding is
either inadequate or non-existent, according the UTB/TSC Web site.
The senate will also award scholarships next
spring and summer sessions, she said.
“A hundred dollars might not be a lot [to some
people], but to a lot of people, $100 is something, because they
have a family, they’re working, and they’re going back to school,”
Garcia said.
The Staff Senate meets from 2 to 4 p.m. the
third Thursday of every month in the SET-B third floor conference
room.
