No space for MySpace

Accessing MySpace.com on campus computers is no longer possible, even though UTB/TSC officials say they are not blocking the popular Web site.

The networking site has been inaccessible from campus since Tuesday, officials said.

“We’re not blocking it,” said Ubaldo Martinez, assistant director of the Information Resources Department, who put the blame on a device that controls the Internet. read more
 

 
Kicking the habit

Freshman international business major Luis Rendon drops cigarettes into a collection box Wednesday to receive a free Subway sandwich during the Smoking Cessation drive in the Cardenas Endowment Courtyard. Students also signed a petition stating whether they are in favor or against a smoke-free campus. The Welcome Week event also featured exhibits on the harmful effects of smoking.

Two birthdays, one celebration

The yearlong celebration of UTB’s 15th year and TSC’s 80th year begins Friday.

Olivia Rivas, chair of the School Specialties Department, is coordinating the anniversary celebration.

At 10 a.m. Friday, the anniversary year kicks off with a speech by UTB/TSC President Juliet V. García outside the Arnulfo L. Oliveira Memorial Library. The clock on the exterior of the library, which rang for the first time Sept. 1, 1991 to mark the partnership of both institutions, will ring again. Members of the Student Government Association and distinguished alumni also will speak. read more

Texas Southmost College trustee Roberto Robles takes the oath of office Aug.18 during the TSC board meeting. Administering the oath is U.S. District Judge Hilda Tagle. Robles, a cardiologist, was re-elected in May.

Tax rate hearings begin today

The Texas Southmost College District will conduct public hearings
today and Thursday on a proposal to lower its tax rate.

The hearings will take place at 5:30 p.m. in the Gorgas Hall boardroom.

Although the proposed rate is lower than the current figure, it is higher than
the effective tax rate and requires hearings. read more
