Dr. Helmut Langerbein, Assistant Professor and Chair of the History Department, will be the first presenter in this semester’s Faculty Research Seminars sponsored by the College of Liberal Arts. Faculty, staff, students, and the community are invited to hear his talk on "Balloons Across the Wall: The West German Leaflet Propaganda Campaign."

The seminar will be held on Friday Sept. 21 from 1:00 –2:00 pm at North 221.

The West German Army’s balloon and leaflet propaganda conducted across the Iron Curtain between 1961 and 1972 constituted an important contribution to the broader ideological struggle between east and west during the Cold War. This research is primarily based upon the memories of two major participants and the documents they collected, often defying standing orders and regulations.

Dr. Langerbien is a former German Air Force officer who received is Ph.D in History from the University of of California, Santa Cruz in 2000. He is the author of "Hitler's Death Squads: The Logic of Mass Murder." He has been at UTB-TSC since January 2004 and serves as department chair since June 2007.
