WEDNESSAY OCT. 3 2007 - The College of Liberal Arts proudly showcases current faculty research in this seminar series open to the faculty, staff, and students of UTB/TSC and the community. "Rediscovering a Forgotten Voice: The Percussion Ensemble Music of Johanna Magdalena Beyer"
Johanna Magdalena Beyer stands among the relatively small number of composers to first write for the medium of percussion ensemble as it began its rise during the 1930s. Although her pioneering efforts remain significant to the history of the percussion ensemble, her percussion music has been completely overlooked for the most part, a forgotten voice. Very few of her works have ever been performed.
This multimedia presentation with sound will present some biographical information of her life and musical analysis of her six pieces for percussion ensemble composed from 1933 to 1939.
The seminar will be held Friday Oct. 5 at 1:00 –2:00 pm in North 221 Office of the Dean.
Dr. Tom Nevill, Assistant Professor, teaches percussion and directs The Rio Bravo Percussion Ensemble. He earned a Doctor of Musical Arts degree and a Master’s degree in Percussion Performance from The University of Nevada, Las Vegas. Dr. Nevill is active throughout the United States and Mexico as a performer, clinician, adjudicator and educator. He is an artist/clinician for Evans Drumheads, Pearl/Adams Musical Instruments, SABIAN Cymbals and Vic Firth Sticks and Mallets.
Dr. Nevill presented this topic at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC) in Austin in November 2006.
