THURSDAY JUNE 7, 2007 - Students and faculty gathered Thursday, June 7, at the Richardson Art Gallery to take a look at the El Centro Photography Exhibition that featured student work from UTB/TSC’s photography classes.

EL Centro, witch translates to downtown aims at depicting daily life in downtown Brownsville. It features many of Brownsville’s historical buildings as well as people’s daily lives. All photographs were shot in black and white.  While some photographers shot by day, others chose to explore the streets by night in order to capture the ordinary as well as the extraordinary scenes of downtown.

Photographers used a variety of cameras ranging from 35mm cameras to Holgas. One photographer even used a cardboard pinhole camera.  Rough Sleeper by Miguel Angel Roberts, a communication senior showed an elderly homeless man lying in the street.

“I just went up and asked if I could take his picture” Roberts said. “I was aiming [to] demonstrate how rough it is for people who don’t have a home. Rough sleeper is actually what they call homeless people in Britain, hence the name,” he said.”

Other featured photographers were Ruby Campos, Adriana Cisneros, Analisa Garcia, Louise Goforth, Marta Del Pozo, Aide Escalante, Yareth Fernandez, Maria Garcia-De-Alba, Alejandro Macias, , Maria Rodriguez, Maria Valdez Gomez, Magallie Torres.

The admission fee $1. The exhibition runs through Thursday, June 28.
