Born into a multilingual family of pioneer stock in Illinois, Jorge Green was teaching at a Puerto Rican community college in Spanish Harlem when he received the call to come to Brownsville.

He has taught 82 different courses at this institution in varied fields of Literature, Linguistics, Folklore, Translation and Interpreting over the course of 29 years here. His principal interests, however, are Latin American Literature and Translation.

At present he is preparing a book of socio-cultural commentary on Spain, tentatively titled Spain: On and off the Beaten Path and a textbook on Translation. He feels particularly proud of his book on Dario’s poetic style, El lenguaje poético de Rubén Darío, published by the Universidad Americana of Managua in 1999, which the distinguished Nicaraguan critic Jorge Arellano has called “el major libro sobre Darío en 30 años”.

He was the series editor of three collections of articles on the Spanish of the Southwest under the auspices of the Rio Grande Research Group for Language and Linguistics, an association he helped found. He is a collaborating editor of the Mesquite Review, in which he often publishes socio-cultural and linguistic articles in both English and Spanish.

He is also a published poet in two languages and the co-author of a four language dictionary. His activity as a translator spans atleast a half century.
