After serving twelve years as an officer in the German Air Force, including a position with NATO in Greece, Helmut Langerbein came to the United States in 1991. He studied at the University of California, Santa Barbara, California State University Northridge, and University of California, Santa Cruz, and received his Ph.D. in 2000. His special interests are in Nazi Germany, the Holocaust, Genocide studies, and the social history of modern Europe.
Helmut Langerbein came to the University of Texas at Brownsville in January 2004. He has been the chair of the History Department since July 2007 and teaches classes in United States, European, and World history. His publications include Hitler's Death Squads: The Lpgoc of Mass Murder and several articles on 20th Century European History.
To relax from his professional activities at the University of Texas at Brownsville, Helmut Langerbein enjoys playing beach volleyball on South Padre Island.
