From 1967 to 1972 he himself served as a naval officer aboard the aircraft carrier Forrestal and as officer-in-charge of the message center at a NATO headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal. Afterwards he spent twelve years working for the Marist monks, mainly in their schools in Australia and the Solomon Islands.

From 1979 to 1983 he was deputy headmaster of Sale Catholic College in Australia. Dr. Adams, who holds degrees from Central Oklahoma State University, the State College of Victoria (Australia), the State University of New York–Binghamton and the University of North Dakota, joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Brownsville in 1987, and currently serves as Professor and Chairman of History.

He has been a summer Fellow at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and a visiting professor at Henan Normal University in China. In 2002 he was awarded an Honorary Professorship by China’s Anyang University.
