I enjoy teaching undergraduate students who are excited about making commitments to their future. My twenty years of teaching undergraduate and graduate communication courses at four-year institutions in Alaska, Colorado, Hawai’i, Peoples Republic of China, and Texas has taught me that students who see their individual goals for the future as part of a larger world view are most successful and happy. My specific teaching areas of interest are public speaking, public relations, and mass media.

I’ve also served in senior level administrative positions, including Assistant Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dean of Students, Director of Admissions, Director of Master of Liberal Arts program, Director of Summer School programs, and Athletic Director for a Division II program. Serving in these positions allowed me to work with talented faculty and professional staff to create and implement writing-across-the-curriculum guidelines and requirements, experiential learning communities,

I’m particularly interested in intentional theme-based learning communities and how lower division and upper division students who select a theme community persist in their academic career. I also enjoy researching and teaching first amendment speech with particular attention to non-verbal speech elements.

My love of hiking, reading, blues music, and world-wide travel helps me be a better teacher. Personal time spent in my log home in Talkeetna, Alaska renews my spirit—and makes me grateful for sunny, warm south Texas.
