The Department of Modern Languages provides programs of study in various languages designed to develop effective oral and written communications skills and the cultural knowledge needed to participate in the global society.

The study of modern languages includes more than language study.  As a liberal, humanistic study, it involves literature, history, sociology—indeed, culture in its particulars as well as its universals.  In this respect, modern language studies offer an education that is as much a preparation for life as for employment.

The Department will continue to expand its General Education course offerings, which currently include Spanish, French, German, Italian, Arabic, Chinese, and American Sign Language.

In addition to its commitment to General Education, the Department seeks to maintain the quality and expand the scope of its undergraduate and graduate degree and certification programs:  BA major in Spanish; BA minors in Spanish, French, and Translation Studies; Graduate Diplomate Certificate in Hispanic Language & Culture; Graduate Diplomate Certificate in Translation Studies; MA major in Spanish, and MAIS concentration in Spanish.
