Statement of Leadership Philosophy

The following leadership tenets guide our work as professionals in student affairs:

We believe a leader must possess integrity.  This means that one leads with honesty and commitment to follow through.  As a leader it is important to facilitate ideas, projects and initiatives to completion.

We believe a leader must be solution oriented.  A leader must constantly look for the positive while anticipating obstacles and still remain positive.  This requires strength and courage from leaders.  Sometimes the ‘right’ decision may appear unpopular yet in the long run is the best solution.  In these situations a leader demonstrates strength and courage.

We believe a leader must approach situations with a willingness to collaborate, understanding the institutional mission and vision is important to all within an organization.  A leader must understand that every unit’s purpose to full-fill the university mission is important.  To that end, we must support each other and look for the “greatest good” for the greatest numbers of our organization.  We must think, win/win.

We believe a leader must support diversity in thoughts, experiences and perspectives.  A leader must listen to all points of view and be flexible.  A leader must value difference and support those who present differing perspectives.  We strive for equity in our actions and in program delivery.

We believe a leader must lead by example and model characteristics they would like to see others in the organization possess.  “We must become the change we want to see”  - Ghandi  A positive leader is encouraging and assists and promotes their team toward individual and group success.  We believe that service is essential to success.
